Okay, so the best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink alcoholic beverages.
So, to avoid developing an eating disorder, what do you do?
Don’t eat? Um, I tried that one. Didn’t quite do the trick. I’ll be back later.
You know “those people.” Maybe you’ve ended up one of them yourself. The losers that never stop going in and out of hospitals, treatment centers, therapy, and the like. They stay on disability. They are known in all the ER’s to be pains in the butt. A drain on services in the community. These people need to be “managed” and are best off kept ON their meds. Not much is expected of them, and they are likely to die young.
Whoa! Really? Folks, that’s precisely what the medical community believes. That we that ended up with the label “chronic mental patient” are living wasted human lives. They have no desire to see us thrive. They don’t want us to die weird, mysterious deaths (such as suicide) so they’ll lock us up to prevent any tarnishing of their reputations, but other than that, we don’t receive any “help.” That’s why we receive the absolute bare minimum income the government can possibly give us, and the bare minimum health care, the least they can get away with.
It would be all fine and dandy, I mean, you can keep going to therapy, keep going to the programs and taking their pills and play kiddie games in the hospitals when you show up. Until what happens is that you start to notice that your body is saying, loud and clear,
Like when your organs give out. Maybe it’s your heart. Or you start to get seizures from the meds. Or your kidneys are destroyed, or your vision is permanently wrecked, or you get diabetes or the weight gain gets so bad that your knees collapse. The meds screw up your hormones and ruin your bones. You can’t have sex cuz your sex drive disappeared ages ago. You were told this was a “trade-off.” You have uncontrollable shakes. You can’t sleep. You sleep too much and can’t get out of bed in the morning. The meds mess up your balance and you can no longer walk straight. You get permanent nerve damage or brain damage. You end up with Tardive Dyskinesia or some other permanent movement disorder. You have severe anxiety or insomnia from meds. You get manic from meds. You feel like crawling out of your skin. You lose your job due to side effects of meds. You try to stop, go through horrible withdrawal, and you get blamed for stopping the drug. You get memory deficit, confusion, and appear to have Alzheimer’s. You appear to have MS. You appear to have epilepsy. You appear to be psychotic or manic. You wonder why you got so fat and can’t lose weight. You can’t stop throwing up because the pills make your stomach sick. You wonder why you are addicted to sleeping pills or antianxiety pills after taking them only a short time.
You get despondent, more depressed, even suicidal. You start to hate the docs when before, you worshiped them. They blame you for your bad attitude, tell you you will never make it. Maybe it’s time to think about a nursing home. Or the state hospital. Or if they can’t pull that one, a Rogers order. Guardianship at least.
Folks, it’s never, ever too late to walk out. Will you join me? Don’t allow your life to be ruined further or to be controlled any longer by these so-called “doctors.” It’s time to take back our bodies.
Walking out was the hardest thing I ever did. I am SOOOOOO thankful now. I have saved my precious life. I will be 56 in just over a week. You bet it’s a celebration. I am a “lifer” no more.

And yet…been there, done that, though the circumstances that caused it all were quite different. Yes, I nearly died of dehydration, kidney failure, and starvation.
And no, I sure didn’t get any “Welcome Home” sign. I got hostility. I got lied to. I got accusations. I got threats. I got locked up and abused. I lost even more friends and spent a month crying and hugging Puzzle all alone for a month, having been traumatized not so much by what happened to my body, but by the societal rejection that followed.
I am so glad I have walked away from those of YOU out there, anyone reading this, that denied me human dignity, that treated me with gross disrespect, that called me a liar when I was not lying, that attempted to rob me of the freedom that every person deserves.
If you don’t get that, well, then, try listening.
Not too many have been there. My body has been there. Go sit for a while in that eerie place, when you are very close to death for an extended period, then come tell me about it.
First of all, Rule Number One: Break every rule! Don’t listen to me, for godsakes! Do whatever the hell you want. You might want to learn the rules first so that you can break a whole bunch of them and be a decent rebel, just like me and Puzzle. Be cute at it, and have twice as much fun.
Rule number two: Spend the least amount of money as possible. Don’t buy stupid expensive shit. It’s not worth it. Yes, go for quality, but not at a price. Common sense….. Chances are, you’re gonna throw the crap out anyway. Think about it.
Rule #3: Listen to your body. Your body is smart. Your mind will try to override what your body wants. Common sense is a great idea, but your body might ask for something strange. Sometimes, you gotta juggle between what makes sense and what your body demands.
Rule #4: Listen very well. But advice is just that, advice. No one knows better than you about you. You know yourself better than anyone.
Rule #5: Stand on your own two feet. That is, self-reliance…it is golden. There is no magic human. No one that can save you except you.
Rule #6: Cultivate a good relationship with animals and plants. It won’t hurt to have an animal in your life, such as a pet or to care for plants and nature. An animal in your life won’t let you down the way people do.
Rule #7: Stay away from gossip.
Rule #8: Priorities…know what ‘s important in your life and stick to that. Everything else can wait. Don’t lose what’s important. Keep it in a safe place. So if it’s your house keys, keep them in the same pocket all the time so you won’t lose them. Carry a flashlight if you have to with fresh batteries in it and plastic bags in your pocket to pick up after your dog, and you won’t need much else.
Rule #9: Be strong. Develop and keep your body fit, with good endurance and keep your muscles as toned as possible. You’ll live longer, you won’t fall down, and if by chance the winds knock you over, you’ll bounce back. No one can put you anywhere you don’t want to be unless you are knocked down and stay down.
Rule #10: Be clean. Keep your life free of clutter and sweep your floor often. Take a shower or a bath and enjoy your daydream.
Rule #11: Dress for the weather. Don’t be stupid or impractical, and wear shoes that will carry you far.
We have a long journey ahead of us, folks. Get ready.

Yep, my new slogan. Last year, it was 55 and alive, this year, 56 and free.
This year I am more than just surviving. More than just barely hanging on. I am more than a thread, a small flickering flame, more than a candle in the wind, that tiny bit of oil left in the lamp, that miracle. I am a giant ball of unstoppable fire.

I refuse to pass judgement one way or another on this. To place “fault” or “blame” or state anything at all about “should have” on anyone’s part…no, I will not do this.
I do understand extreme social isolation and what it does to a person. I do understand that extreme social isolation is generally not the voluntary choice of the isolated person. It may seem like voluntary choice, but if you truly examine the situation, invariably, it isn’t that person’s choice. Isolation is forced upon the person.
Isolation eats away at you like poison. It corrodes the soul. It skews your thinking. And if your thinking is messed up as a result of something you didn’t in fact choose voluntarily, is that really “illness”? I don’t think so.
Let’s not be so quick to “diagnose.” Or judge.
Here are some ideas from a pro who has spent the past 10 Christmases alone, and most of the past 30 decades of Christmases entirely alone, and certainly NOT surrounded by “loving family.” Let’s face it, not everyone’s family sticks around. Might as well have a blast!
1. First of all, God bless our pets. Give them something special today. At least we have them, right? They’ve stuck around even when no one else has. Puzzle had a super nice meal and the weather is terrific. A bit cold but we enjoyed our walk and we cuddled some, too.
2. Do some cleaning chore you’ve been putting off forever. Today I got together all those miscellaneous extra charge cords that are scattered all over the place. I told myself, “This won’t do!” So I totally organized them. I put all my small electronic knick-knacks into one place and labeled everything so that it could be easily found. Now, next time I ask myself, “Where the heck is that___?”….I can find it.
3. Update whatever. Your antiviral, or your phone, or whatever gadget or version or whatever you’ve been putting off, if you’re a gadget or techno person. Today I followed my phone’s instructions to a T, and successfully updated my phone. I am so happy that I did this right. I’ve been putting this off for weeks.
4. Get rid of that pile of junk that’s been sitting around forever. So for me, it’s that pile of junk mail that’s accumulated. I don’t throw it out cuz I recycle. So it sits here waiting for me to carry it off to the recycling bins. I am going to be very happy when this task is done.
5. Laundry. Problem is, everyone else has the same idea. All the other lonely people are at that one open laundromat today. Go meet the love of your life!
